The event which was on the theme: “Selecting A Business Management Software In A Volatile Business Environment”, featured detailed presentations on how businesses can optimize growth by being receptive to technology, as well as a deep dive demo on SAP Business One ERP software.

CTN has come to stay

—GRA Boss

 

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says implementation of the Cargo Tracking Note (CTN), which officially began yesterday, has come to stay.

The implementation, according to GRA, is to provide greater scrutiny of major imports for both valuation and security management purposes.

Speaking at a media conference in Accra, Commissioner-General Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Nti said: “Our friends from the media, I wish to assure you that CTN has come to stay. I once again appeal to you to help GRA sensitise the trading and general public about benefits the nation stands to gain in our efforts to actualise the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.

 

He explained: “From Monday, 15th October 2018, importers whose imports – from records – exceed 36 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) per year will be required to obtain a CTN Number in the country of export.

“This means any importer who imports less than 36 TEUs per year is exempt from CTN compliance. Further, businesses that import more than 36 TEUs per year but can demonstrate that the nature of their imports and their turnovers make them small importers will also be exempt,” he said.

He indicated that the exemptions are to ensure that small- and medium-scale importers – mostly petty-traders, market women and men, small distributors, and other small to medium businesses – are free from the requirements of this intervention.

He said government will monitor closely implementation of the important Customs-management tool, with a view to learning the needed lessons and adjusting the scope and mechanics of the policy to achieve both the valuation and security enhancement objectives of the intervention.

Banks must pay more taxes to reduce risky borrowings

To reduce or avert short-term borrowing or overnight lending by banks, which are very risky, and curb their excesses when they get bigger, government should introduce a 1 percent tax on such borrowings, Dr. Sajid Chaudhry, a finance lecturer from the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, UK, has said.
“A bank tax will provide Ghana a sustained source of revenue with attempts to move the country’s economy beyond dependence on aid, and will further reduce budget deficit. It will act as a catalyst for banks to reduce reliance on short-term funding sources and help reduce banks’ risk,” he said.
Speaking ahead of today’s roundtable discussion by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in Accra, on the theme ‘The Contribution of Banks in the Changing Tax Environment’, Dr. Chaudhry added that to urge banks to lend more to businesses and households, another 5 percent tax can be slapped on those that have been seen as not lending enough and rather investing customers’ deposits in government-backed securities.
“Big banks are making profit at the expense of the public. Ghana should keep the National Fiscal Stabilisation Levy for banks and other industries and introduce a 5 percent tax on profit before tax on the big six banks, which will yield approximately GH¢106million,” he said.
Dr. Chaudhry said that as Ghana moves toward a risk-based minimum regulatory capital regime, banks’ mergers and acquisitions are expected in the future as banks are required to hold more capital. “A tax on liabilities will be particularly helpful when banks are bigger, riskier and earning even more profit in the future.”
He noted that a tax of this nature exists everywhere in the world. “A bank levy or tax can be applied on liabilities, assets or capital. Most of the countries apply a levy on liabilities. For example, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
“France applies levy on regulatory capital, Slovenia applies on assets. A few countries such as the Netherlands and United Kingdom seem to tax only bigger banks and liabilities if they are beyond a certain threshold,” he said.
He explained that a survey that compared Ghana’s banking sector to other countries with similar purchasing power parity – including Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan and Ivory Coast – shows that Ghana’s banking sector is too profitable.
“The net interest margin, which is the difference between the interest banks pay on deposits and interest paid on lending is the highest. This means they are earning a lot of interest income. The after-tax return on assets in Ghana is also the highest among these countries. If you look at the return on equity of all banks it is about 28 percent in Ghana, which is also the highest in the region,” he added.
These indicators, according to him, mean government can easily rake-in more revenue from the banking sector and still allow the sector to drive economic growth with the ongoing regulatory reforms.
The survey, he said, shows that the big six banks in 2017 – GCB Bank, Ecobank, Fidelity, Stanbic, Standard Chartered and Barclays – posted underlying profit that includes profit after tax, provision for bad and doubt debt, tax and others of GH¢4.9billion, which is a 77 percent rise from the 2016 data.
Meanwhile, comparing the rise in underlying profit to other alternative uses of capital shows that the 10-year average return on the GSE All Share Index posted 13.52 percent yield; that on 7-year government bonds posted 17.52 percent; while real GDP growth rate in 2017 was about 9 percent.
Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Central Bank, recently said one of the major causes of the collapse of some banks in the country was the use of short-term liquidity support for long-term asset building.

Meet Lucy Quist: Technology Gem Turn Ghana Football Vice President

We congratulate her on the achievement.  

Arguably the most powerful woman in Ghana football today is former Airtel Ghana CEO, Lucy Quist who has been appointed the Vice President of the Normalisation Committee to run Ghana football.      

Quist will assist businessman Dr Kofi Amoah to run Ghana football and organise the election of new executives of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

 

 

By virtue of the mandate of the Normalisation Committee, Quist will wield considerable power in Ghanaian football circles over the next few months.

The normalisation committee’s mandate includes the following tasks:

– To run the GFA’s daily affairs and cooperate with the special task force once it has been set up by FIFA, CAF and the Government of Ghana;

 

– To review the GFA statutes to ensure compliance with the requirements of FIFA and CAF, particularly art. 15 of the FIFA Statutes, and;

– Once the GFA statutes meet the requirements of FIFA and CAF, to organise and conduct elections of a GFA executive committee on the basis of the revised GFA statutes.

Quist is yet to utter her first words as Vice President of the Normalisation Committee but sources say she is expected to bring her rich experience in corporate governance and administration to bear in the day-to-day running of the GFA.

Quist is known as a trailblazer in the Ghanaian telecommunications sector having become the first Ghanaian woman to lead a multinational telecom company (Airtel) in April 2014 although a lot is not known about her involvement in sports asides CSR activities including the Airtel Rising Stars competition during her time at Airtel.

The Airtel Rising Stars was a youth football initiative undertaken by Airtel Africa. The programme, launched in 2011 focused on identifying and nurturing budding soccer talent from the grassroots onto an international stage. It targeted both boys and girls between the ages of 13 – 17.

About Lucy Quist

Born in 1974, Lucy is the founder and CEO of Quist Blue Diamond – a company that leverages technology, engineering, data science to transform business models – and a co-founder of FreshBakery, the parent company of the FreshPay payment platform in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

She also serves as the President of the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Ghana. She is a technology professional who advocates for g

reater participation of young people in STEM for development.

Early life and education

Born in London, United Kingdom, to Ghanaian parents Peter and Mary Afriyie, Lucy Quist spent her formative years in both Europe and Africa. She went to Wesley Girl’s High School in Cape Coast and attended sixth form at the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Accra, both in Ghana.

She went on to study at the University of East London, graduating with a first-class honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

She holds an MBA from INSEAD in France.

Career

Quist began her working life as an Electrical and Electronic Engineer at Ford Motor Company, progressing to Chartered Engineer (IET), UK.

She joined the Royal Bank of

Scotland as a change manager. In 2008, she stepped into telecommunications.

Millicom

Quist started her telecommunications career at Millicom International Cellular (MIC), where she worked in business development, sales & distribution, and marketing.

Vodafone

Lucy Quist led the transformation of Vodafone Wholesale from a local to an international player. Later she went on to become the MD of Vodafone Ghana’s Enterprise division.
Quist joined Vodafone in Ghana from Millicom as Head of Strategy & Planning. She also ran the company’s wholesale and enterprise businesses.

Airtel

Since taking over the helm of affairs at Airtel Ghana, as the first Ghanaian woman to lead a multinational telecom company, Quist has successfully re-positioned the company into the fastest growing telecom brand growing customer market share for both voice and data.

She also led Airtel Ghana to win

more than 20 prestigious awards.

She personally led #EvolveWithSTEM, Airtel Ghana’s CSR initiative to encourage young people to participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Quist resigned from Airtel in 2017 in the face of a merger between Tigo and Airtel.

“After three and a half years of leading the amazing team at Airtel Ghana, the time is right for me to move on to the next chapter. It has been a truly remarkable journey and I thank each and every one of you for your support, encouragement and business partnership over the course of my stewardship. We are proud of our achievements,” Quist posted on social media

“Particularly, I want to thank all those who have been part of the many initiatives I have led over the last few years to empower young people and every young person who works with me for that matter. Notably the Evolve with STEM and the Bold New Normal initiatives. I look forward to empowering more young people even as I continue my professional leadership journey. Together we will create the Bold New Normal of prosperity for our country and continent,” she added.
