Filing Your Personal Income Tax Returns: A Civic Duty with Benefits

As we approach the deadline for tax filings, employees are reminded of their statutory obligation to file personal income tax returns in accordance with Section 124 of the Income Tax Act 2015 ACT 896. All employees must file their return of income for the tax year of assessment by April 30, 2025. This annual exercise is more than just a legal requirement; it is a demonstration of patriotism and civic responsibility.

Beyond compliance with the law, fulfilling this obligation comes with several advantages.

A tax clearance certificate, which is issued upon compliance, is essential for undertaking various transactions, including:

  • Clearing goods from the ports

  • Bidding for contracts from government agencies

  • Receiving payments for government contracts

  • Obtaining a passport from the passport office

  • Securing a driver’s license from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)

  • Registering land documents with the Lands Commission

Steps to File Your Personal Income Tax (PIT) Return

As an employee, you need to take the following steps to ensure compliance:

1. Obtain a Tax Certificate – Your employer must provide you with a tax certificate that outlines your total income and the corresponding taxes paid on your behalf throughout the year.

2. Activate Your GRA Taxpayer Portal – Ensure that you have access to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) taxpayer portal, which is the platform for filing your returns.

3. Complete Your PIT Filing – Using the tax certificate from your employer, log into the taxpayer portal and complete the personal income tax filing process to remain compliant.

How Can Your Employer Assist?

Employers play a crucial role in ensuring their employees meet their tax obligations. They can do so by:

1. Providing the Required Tax Certificate – It is the employer’s statutory duty to issue employees with their tax certificates in accordance with Section 118 (4) of the Income Tax Ac 2015, ACT 896

2. Engaging a Tax Consultant – Employers may engage a consultant to assist employees in the tax filing process, making compliance easier and more efficient.
